A load resistor is any resistor that is used specifically to dissipate power in a circuit (see Resistor Primer,for more information). Sometimes many of them are used in series or in parallel to dissipate more power than a single resistor can alone (see our Resistor Cages, for more information). OhmWeve resistors work well as load resistors, since they handle high power and are light in weight. Some load resistors require heavy heat sinks to do their job. Our resistors don’t due to their unique design. Simply blowing air on them will more than double their heat dissipation.
Power dissipation from a resistor is calculated as:
P = (i^2)R or P = IV
Where
P = Power (Watts)
i = Current (amps)
V = Voltage (Volts)
Ohmweve resistors are the highest power per weight or volume resistors on the market. They achieve high wattages without the need of a heat sink. The unique design maximizes surface area while minimizing thermal mass, allowing unimpeded convection and radiation away from the resistor surface.
OhmWeve load resistors are woven with a resistance alloy wire and high temperature yarn to allow high heat dissipation in a slim configuration. They work well in DC or pulsed applications and can carry voltages up to 20kV. Resistor cages are available for mounting resistors in series or parallel.
